When it comes to love have you ever felt lost, alone, or alienated? Then Option 5's celestial pop-track 'Chasing Stars' might be just what you need to hear. It's an intelligently written song guided by the shared vocals of Janis Drolsbach and featuring Alina Gramsch.
As the song begins we're greeted by Janis' deep and strong voice, rich with German accent, delivering a subdued singing approach that sets a vibe for the song to build on. This moody style soon blooms into a higher register of empassioned vocals conjuring feelings of both heartache and freedom.
Cosmic words like ‘asteroids’, ‘Jupiter’, and ‘space junk’ are all metaphors used cleverly in the lyrics. Through them we are given a glipse of how vast the scope of love and romance is. How isolated one can feel navigating the huge realms of deep space, never quite feeling that you'll find some sturdy piece of space rock to attach to. That is, how can two individualls soaring through the cosmic vastness of love ever meet and create something solid? Perhaps they never will. In harmony with this, Janis and Alina rarely share vocals, each one individually expressing their own thoughts and feelings throughout song. Alina’s charming vocals bring a second perspective to the song paralleling Janis’ theme of unsuccessful love. Even if you don't catch every word of the lyrics you sure feel the emotions.
Option 5 started out with Janis and his brother, Fabian (keyboards) who have a history of creating music together. To create a band Janis sourced players he knew from his former school's big band, Max (drums), Nils (guitar) and Leo (bass). He informs that originally his intent was to play German pop music but as the band developed that didn't suit. In Chasing Stars the band keeps the song atmospheric and also bring out groove and funk to take the track up to dance levels. There's even the pleasant surprise of a cool guitar solo.
The band plays live, and three times have been part of a music festival in their hometown of Giessen. They cite their influences as ranging from Queen, U2, Dream Theatre, Linkin Park, Foo Fighters and strongly from Coldplay. However, the band is phasing out cover songs to develop more original tracks and are working on playing in new cities. As for their live shows Janis informs that, “When we play live, the audience can expect an atmospheric show with meticulously worked out sounds and musical precision.”
Janis' songwriting comes from experiences, whether his own or that of other people. Or even experiences that happen to characters in movies or television. The process begins with lyrics, then melody and harmony. Once he gets a take down with his guitar and vocals he presents it to the band and they collectively develop the song. Chasing Stars came close to it's final arrangement after a 7 hour songwriting session. The drums, bass and guitar were recorded in a professional studio and the final recordings and arrangements done in a home studio.
The end result is a well written and crafted pop track with quality lyrical content and a great over-all feel. In fact, despite running at four minutes it feels the song is over all too quickly.
